A sound recording is an original work of authorship that “results from the fixation of a series of musical, spoken, or other sounds” in a tangible medium of expression. In general, a sound recording is a recorded performance.

Types of Licences
A music video is a cinematograph film comprised in the repertoire and in which the copyright in Singapore is owned by and/or exclusively licensed and controlled by a record company represented by MRSS.
A karaoke video is a cinematograph film comprised in the repertoire and in which the copyright in Singapore is owned by and/or exclusively licensed and controlled by a record company represented by MRSS.
A permit is required for the public performance of sound recordings for events such as concerts, company Dinner & Dance, exhibitions and trade shows, etc. Event companies, venue operators and organisers of these ad-hoc events are required to obtain a permit from MRSS.
An entertainment outlet such as a Karaoke or a Pub that plays music-on-demand in a public place requires an MRSS licence. This applies to any sound recording which has been re-recorded and reproduced on a hard disc or a computerised storage system.

- Telecast of Music Videos
- Transmission on Cable TV of Music Videos
- Simulcast of Music Videos and Sound Recordings via the Internet and on Cable TV
- Internet Radio Webcasting
- Re-recording and Reproduction of karaoke video and other music videos on Cable TV
